When remodeling a master bath, most homeowners know what they want. As a person who works in the high end kitchen and bath fixture industry I hear many clients stress how they want to have their own retreat. They are willing to put up with the inconvenience and expense in order to achieve the dream of coming home, going into their bedrooms and pass through to the bathroom so their can go in and say to themselves (and possibly their significant others) ldquo;ahh, at last it’s our time to relaxrdquo;. Unfortunately, somewhere in the process of the remodel experience Murphy’s Law arrives and somehow many people forget why they started the project. Many people see a picture in a magazine, visit a resort, see a show on TV showing how a family re-did their bathroom and the process went smoothly and seemed to be over in a quick 30 minutes, less if they were looking at a written article in some form of publication.

Real remodeling is not the same thing! First, decide on a budget. Then double or even triple it. Seriously-otherwise there are going to be more than the average tense moments. Now for fun, daydream about what your fantasy bathroom would be like. Do you want an indoor steam shower? A sauna? Whirlpool or Airbath-for one or two bathers? On the practical side-don’t buy your plumbing ldquo;because it’s prettyrdquo;. Spend a little more and get quality. The last thing you want is to be bragging on how you spent ldquo;only $300.00rdquo; on 2 sink faucets, a shower set and a roman tub set up and then in a year, find out those valves and cartridges are now leaking behind your walls and causing water damage and mold. You can chintz on the towel racks and toilet paper holders, but always buy the best you can afford on the plumbing, you will be glad you did! Make sure you hire a contractor who has the same agenda you do. Nothing worse than hiring someone who’s ideas are opposite of yours and has only their pocketbook in mind. Same with hiring a plumber, especially the plumber.

Someone who is so old school that they think ldquo;those fancy manufacturers will cause nothing but troublerdquo;, usually do not want to take the time to put in the plumbing correctly. Face facts-quality plumbing is usually more work to put into your walls than the items you get off the rack at your local home improvement store. I actually had a client’s plumber ruin her plumbing by trying to attach her high end trim to an off the rack valve ldquo;because he really like the quality of the other valverdquo;! This move wound up in a lawsuit. If a plumber ever tries to convince you to use ldquo;my good valverdquo; and attach your trim-fire him/her and don’t let them near anything. This move is sure to cause major water damage-quickly! If you hire an interior designer-same thing holds true. Make sure you hire someone who wants you to enjoy the outcome of the bathroom.

Remember-you are going to be living with the end results, not them. If you like modern and want a spa, don’t hire someone whose specialty is traditional and thinks all you need are the basics. Another major mistake homeowners make when they start a remodel is misjudging the time element. This is also due to the ldquo;30 minuterdquo; extreme makeover shows and advertisements. Quality takes time. Depending on how much of a remodel you are doing, you should figure a master bath will take anywhere between 2-6 months. Cabinets and countertops take time to create. Flooring and plumbing need to be done in stages. Some items could take up to 3 months to arrive. Be prepared for the inconvenience of having to share the facilities with other members of the family for an extended period of time. Whatever you do, don’t decide to start demolition in mid-October and think the ldquo;newrdquo; bathroom will be ready to debut for Thanksgiving; it’s just not going to happen.

6.A mountain bike, There are so many mountain bike options in this area that it would be hard to live here and not want to get out and ride a bike from time to time. 5.Ducks/Beavers or Huskies/Cougars gear. If your man loves college sports, than some school gear might be a good gift. If he lives in Oregon, than the University of Oregon Ducks or the Oregon State Beavers could be his team. If he lives in Washington, than either the University of Washington Huskies or the Washington State Cougars might be his favorite. Of course there are smaller colleges throughout the region that have good teams with good fan support, but these are the largest and most likely. Check the school websites for gift ideas.

3.A really good book. The area is the most literate of the country, with the highest book sales of any region. So your man likes to read while setting by a fire on a rainy winter evening. So you might have to find something he hasn’t read. Look at any of the good book sites for ideas.

If he likes fishing at all, or even if he just likes the idea of going to sea, you can’t go wrong by giving him a fishing trip on one of the many boats that go out after the big ones. Comedians joke about the test of any marriage being a home remodeling job. After having lived through a kitchen remodel, I now longer think it’s a joke. And it’s not even vaguely funny.

You see we decided to remodel our 1960’s galley kitchen. Every lifestyle magazine talks about how a kitchen is a gathering place, to catch up on the day’s events, a place to do homework, oh yes, and eat too. Well our kitchen was all of the above and also the place to feed the dogs.

Now most mothers get upset when everyone doesn’t sit down to dinner at the same time. I got upset when everyone did, as there was not any space to move.

Also storage space wasn’t in the right place. The dishwasher was at the opposite end of the kitchen from where the dishes were stored. And my kitchen is 22′ longmdash;a true galley kitchen.

Enter my husband. He, along with another one of his engineer friends, decided it was possible to bump out the kitchen to gain some extra space. I was reassured it would be easy to do, not take a lot of time. Money, did anyone mention money? I’ve watched those TV shows where every remodel project runs over in time and especially money.

Kitchen remodels can cost anywhere from a couple of thousand dollars for new flooring, and paint to well over $100,000 for top of the line cabinets and appliances.

In spite of my better judgment I agreed to the remodel. For the next few weeks I looked at pictures in magazines, online suggestions, even videos on YouTube.

I personally wanted to have the a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-XemGZWnSE”60 second remodel/a shown in the YouTube video. Not possible, but in my research I learned 4 questions I needed to ask both myself and my husband:

1. What Do I Really Want?

Like everything in life there’s a difference between what I need and what I’d like to have.

- Ask yourself if you want a decorating makeover with paint, cupboard doors and flooring?

-Or do you need space for people to sit or counter space to make meals?

- Do you cook or are most of your meals microwave or take out?

-Is there enough storage space? Of the type you need?

- Do you have enough electrical outlets and are they in the places you need?

-Is the lighting correct for the job you need to do?

-Do your appliances match what you need?

-Does your refrigerator fit your family?

-Do you need more or fewer burners on your stove?

2. Are You Willing To Have A Disaster Area In Your Home?

Contractors will be in your home for weeks even months depending on the size of your remodel job. If you decide to do a lot by yourself the process can last even longer.

Your refrigerator will move into another room as well as the microwave. Unless you have one of the outlets for stoves, you’ll be without a stove for at least part, if not all, of the remodel.

Consider you will be either eating a lot of ‘take out’ or eating out during this time. You will not be able to use your kitchen during the remodel.

One plus is remodeling your kitchen has been one of those costs which help with house reselling.

3. What Type Of A Remodel Job Are You Doing?

Are you doing a total gut and replace? Or do you want just a surface redo? Either one can work and make you happy.

4. Are There Ways To Reduce The Cost Of Remodeling?

From material choices, to doing it yourself to contractor choice there are many ways to save money. The key to saving money is to think the project through before you start. Restarts and redos’ are expensive.

To Get You And Your Spouse On The Same Page

My suggestion is to first spend some time sitting in your kitchen with a spiral notebook and a pen. Look around you and write down everything you’d change if money were not a concern. Flip the notebook around and ask your spouse to do the same. No cheating here.

Put the notebook with the pen on top of the refrigerator or somewhere you can reach it. Now for one week (or longer) every time you say to yourself, “I wish I had…” or “It would be nice if…” regarding your kitchen, write it in the notebook.

The exercise was an eye opening experience for us. For example, both of us like to cook, but my husband likes to use every pot and pan we have. I’m the minimalist. “Use it, wash and reuse.” He needs lots of counter space and a huge sink. I wanted an easy to clean countertop and he wanted a countertop to use for his baking.

At the end of the week, you and your spouse need to take your list. Mark a 1 next to what you have to have, a 2 next to what would be nice to have, and a 3 next to what would be included in your fantasy kitchen (if money, time and space were not an object.)

Next sit down and compare lists. We decided what we really wanted. Also we found what were a “nice to” and the “wish list”.

Discussion Now Saves Money And Arguments Later

This gave us the chance to talk about what we wanted and start talking about how much we wanted to spend. The next few days we spent online researching prices. After our research we sat down again with our list. This time we were pleasantly surprised at how easily we were able to agree to what we needed to include in our kitchen remodel.

You’ll probably find not everything can or will be included. I’m still hoping to win the lottery, but until then I’m ready to remodel my kitchen with most of the items on my ‘have to have list.’

Sears is an excellent place to find popular Energy Star appliances that are harder to find.

Sears carries Kenmore appliances, and Kenmore often offers sales on their appliances. Currently at Sears, you can save 20% off of Kenmore and Kenmore Elite small kitchen appliances, such as blenders.

If you visit the Sears website and browse through the pages, you’ll find all sorts of ways to save on Energy Star kitchen appliances. For example, there is a ten percent off open-box coupon if you visit the store and find an open-box appliance (usually this means it was a display model.) If you sign up for Sears emails through the website, you can get $10 worth of coupons. Sears seems to always be having some type of sale. There is the back to school sale, and sales for most holidays, like a Labor Day sale and Memorial Day sale. Sears prices are always competitive, and beat most other appliance store prices.

In addition to sales and discounts, you can usually apply for and/or use your Sears credit card and get 12 months no interest on a payment plan. Sometimes, this is extended to 24 months. The Sears credit card periodically also offers additional percentages off of certain appliances.

What I find really nice and helpful about the Sears website is the link to the ‘Energy Star home.’ If you do a search on the Sears website for energy star kitchen appliances, the page it takes you to has a link for Energy Star @ home. When you follow this, you’ll come to a drawing of a home. Click on the kitchen, and it will show you different Energy Star appliances for the kitchen. These include range hoods and ranges, light fixtures, and more. Sears has also won the Energy Star Excellence in Appliance Retailing for seven of the past eight years.

2. Lowe’s. Lowe’s has won awards for the past six years for their Energy Star products. Lowe’s carries a variety of kitchen appliances as well. You can find refrigerators and dishwashers, as well as smaller kitchen appliances like light fixtures and blenders. Lowe’s is a great place to find popular Energy Star appliances that are harder to find. If you buy an appliance that costs over $397, Lowe’s will give you free local delivery and also haul away your old appliance. The Lowe’s website also has a link to Energy Star products, that can be found by typing in Energy Star appliances into the website’s search engine.

Lowe’s features weekly ads, that can be found on the website. Currently, Lowe’s has a promotion where you can get rebates back up to $750 for purchasing Electrolux appliances. Purchasing Whirlpool appliances also is currently giving rebates of up to $400 for buying four appliances. Periodically, you will find special promotions on the Lowe’s credit card. For example, sometimes they offer free financing for up to a year. In general, you will always find no annual fees for the credit card and low monthly payments. Lowe’s prices are not as inexpensive as Sears, so you’ll want to use their special promotions and sales if you choose to purchase your Energy Star kitchen appliances here.

3. Bed Bath and Beyond. Bed Bath and Beyond is the best choice for finding Energy Star lightbulbs that could be used for appliances in your kitchen. Although not officially an Energy Star product, Bed Bath and Beyond sells an electricity usage monitor for $40 that will help you see how much electricity you are using and when.

You won’t find major kitchen appliances that are Energy Star approved at Bed Bath and Beyond, but it’s worth checking out the smaller kitchen appliances. You can sign up for their email on the website and be sent notice of appliance sales and special promotions.

Bed Bath and Beyond is great about sending out mass mailings of coupons to everyone in the community. Every month, I get a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $25 or something similar. If you ask your neighbor, you may be able to get her coupon as well if she’s not using it.

Bed Bath and Beyond has seasonal sales, and sales on major holidays such as Labor Day and Memorial Day. The store does not have its own credit card, but you can purchase gift cards. The prices at Bed Bath and Beyond are reasonable, but not always as low as Walmart.

4. Walmart. If Walmart sold everything there is, I wouldn’t ever shop anywhere else. Walmart is hands down going to be the best place to find low prices for Energy Star kitchen appliances. Walmart features the brands Danby and Heier, so you will find Energy Star dishwashers and refrigerators at Walmart. Walmart also sells Energy Star lightbulbs and small kitchen appliances such as blenders. Walmart has weekly store ads with sales on specific items, as well as seasonal sales like back to school and summer savings. Each holiday, there are also holiday sales to be found.

Walmart did away with their layaways, which were a great way to put an appliance on hold and pay for it later. The Hagerstown, MD store where I live did away with layaways, so this option is no longer available. However, there is a Walmart credit card that offers periodic savings.

5. Kmart. Kmart is a good place to find small kitchen appliances that are Energy Star approved, as well as lightbulbs and light fixtures. In some states, Kmart has a tax free day once per year where you can purchase certain items without having to pay taxes on them. Currently, Kmart is having a 20% off sale on home clearance items. Kmart has a credit card that is offered through Sears, as the two companies have merged. You will often find specials and promotions on the website, and you can be sent notice of specials if you sign up to receive emails through Kmart. Kmart has excellent prices, almost as good as Walmart’s prices. They tend to have more sales, so if you catch a sale you may find prices that even beat Walmart! The Kmart credit card is now featuring $10 back if you spend $200.

6. Home Depot. Home Depot is somewhere you can find almost anything. You’ll find the full range of Energy Star kitchen appliances at Home Depot, from ranges to refrigerators to light bulbs. You can get the Home Depot credit card and often be able to purchase an appliance with no interest for a year or more. Other specials are often found on the website, or by visiting the store. Home Depot always has sales around every major holiday, as well as seasonal sales like back to school specials. The prices are not as low as Walmart or Sears, but if you find specials and sales, you can still get a similar price. The Home Depot team seems to be helpful in helping you find the products you are looking for.
